A short, but more challenging road ride, with some steady hills to get up and a couple of stretches on busier roads, but some nice quiet lanes to make up for it.

We'll set off from Elvaston Castle and start with a flatter section along the Trent flood plain before we turn off and up through a couple of lovely villages on our way to the Cow Shed café, which is inconveniently at the top of a hill. We'll then return via a slightly different route, on possibly busier roads that do have space and width for a cycle lane.

Suitable for more confident riders who don't mind a few hills and busier roads, but as always, the pace will be dictated by those feeling the slowest on the day, we can stop to catch our breath and encourage each other on the hills and no one gets dropped or left behind. The ride is all on road, but any type of bike will do, although knobbly mountain bike tyres will make it feel like hard work.

Bring a working bike, a working helmet, a working sense of humour, an inner tube to fit your tyres just in case, and some money for the car park and café stop. Dress for the weather - December could mean anything weatherwise but a heat wave is unlikely, so maybe carry an extra layer in case we get chilly at the café stop or if you arrive early at the car park.

PLEASE NOTE - with it being December, the weather forecast could change up to the last minute. If I feel the conditions are too bad to ride in then I will cancel the ride so check your emails on the morning
