Mining and Mag Lime magic tour to Pittington Hill
Start at Durham City Gymnastics Centre (formerly Sherburn Leisure Centre) DH6 1QX
Starting at the Leisure Centre (access via B1283, not the housing estate) we’ll head out on minor roads to Littletown and Haswell where we’ll take a look at the former colliery engine house and memorial to local cycle champ Tommy Simpson. We’ll continue via the road to Hetton where we’ll pick up the railway path to head to Pittington. Here we’ll take a break from cycling and head up onto the hill to immerse ourselves in the botanical delights which have developed in the former quarry area. We’ll return via road to Sherburn.
As we’ll be on road and railway paths you’d be best with a hybrid bike although a mountain bike or robust road bike will also be suitable. Please come suitably dressed for the weather and make sure you’ve got a spare tube to fit your tyres. Expect to be out for about 4-5 hours - we will be spending time enjoying the sights as well as cycling.
