Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle

Come and try out the fantastic new cycle infrastructure around the city. Discover ways to get across the town avoiding traffic and making the most of stunning urban green spaces and flowing cycle paths. This ride is mostly flat with only very small undulations and is mostly off road, with just a few short stretches on quiet suburban streets.  A good ride for confident youngsters, improving beginners, but also suiting more experienced riders interested in the new local cycle infrastructure or just wanting a relaxing ride through the beautiful parks and green spaces in the city.    The ride starts out at The Journey Cycle Café on Higham Place.  You'll take advantage of the impressive newly opened segregated cycle lane on John Dobson Street.  You will pass beautiful sculptures amidst the imposing architecture of Newcastle University Campus.   The beautiful back lanes of St Thomas Place lead you out into Leazes Park for a spin round the lake. See if you can spot some of the city's famous tame bovines as you pass Cow Hill and traverse the Town Moor - where the Freeman of Newcastle have exercised their right to graze cows on the Moorland from time immemorial, the right to do so having originated prior to the Norman Conquest.  You pass alongside the allotments before joining the Strategic Cycle Route 4 to take you through the chic streets of Jesmond. Crossing Armstrong Bridge there's great views over the Ouseburn Valley and down into Jesmond Dene.   Will you spot the magical Shoe Tree as you wend your way through the rhodedendons of  Heaton Park?  The  City Stadium has a segregated cycle path across to Sandyford, passing the green gym and drifts of wildflower planting.  Before you know it you'll be back in the centre of  town, arriving back at The Journey with time for a  cuppa and a chance to pick up information about local cycling opportunities.
