The Sunday Base Layer is a ride for those new to road cycling, returning from injury or those looking for a social ride. The standard ride is 28.5 miles. We also have the option of an extended ride of up to 40 miles, which splits off part way round and re-joins at the cafe stop so that we can cycle back together as a single group. The extended ride is suitable for those who are confident of riding the standard base layer and want to stretch this further and also for more experienced riders.
Both are road rides, though hybrids will be fine. New riders are very welcome and will be fully supported around the ride. If you fancy a chat and a great breakfast break half way round then this is the ride for you. The ride speed is approx 10 to 12 miles per hour, based on the group's ability.
The ride goes from Cannon Hill park out into the quiet rural roads to the south of Birmingham, the ride has the option of splitting into two with the standard ride going through Tanworth-in-Arden, to the cafe stop and the extended group doing a few extra miles before meeting up for the cafe stop and then everryone returns into Birmingham together. The standard route is undulating with one noticeable hill shortly before the well-earned cafe stop.
For those that have the time there is the opportunity for a coffee or tea back at the start.
