A longer ride today intended as a ‘whole-day’ event with the focus on our destination, Cobham, where the Mill opens only one afternoon a month. We always adapt the pace to suit participants by riding at the pace of the slowest rider so no-one will be left behind. The route does use some busy roads with fast-moving vehicles though which means you want to be confident riding in traffic.

Leaving Syon Park we catch our first glimpse of the Thames before riding to St Margarets, Twickenham, Teddington and Kingston Bridge. After using the river path to Hampton Court, we cross the river in order to find our way to East Molesey and Hersham. A lovely green stretch follows as we make our way across the A3 to Cobham where we will stop for lunch and a visit to the 19th century Cobham Mill, the only fully working watermill in Surrey. The mill - where we can expect to see corn being milled and watch a short, informative video - is operated by volunteers and admission is free.

Our return journey brings us through Esher on our way back to Hampton Court and Syon. The ride is reasonably flat with the opportunity to rest if needs be on the inclines in the central section between Hersham and Esher. Anyone wishing to restrict their mileage on the return will be able to take a train from Esher to Wimbledon/Clapham Junction on the Waterloo line. Please note the later-than-usual starting time and that, in consequence, we are unlikely to be back to Syon until region 5.00pm.

To join the ride you need a bike in full working order so please check beforehand that the brakes work, the wheels spin freely and the tyres are pumped up. Dress for the weather, avoiding loose garments that could catch in your chain. A helmet, drinking water and a spare inner tube are recommended as well as a snack, cash for refreshments and a lock for your bike.
