Watford Cycle Hub - Flying without Wings

Starting from Watford Cycle Hub, this Steady Plus route takes in quiet cycle paths and country lanes to a lovely airfield at Elstree. Here we take a break at the on-site cafe to refuel and perhaps watch some take-offs! This route has a couple of gentle hills and just under 100m of climbing in total - so is a good ride for anyone who wants a route which is mainly on-the-flat, with a little hill practice. There is also short section on a busier road, so again, good if you want a mainly traffic-free route, with a little road practice in the safety of a group with British Cycling qualified Ride Leaders at the front & back to keep you safe. :) As a Steady Plus category ride, the aim is to help everyone round the route without pace pressure, the pace average over the route will be around 8-10 mph.

The section up towards Wall Hall can get a bit muddy and there's a few potholes. This route is 'do-able' on a road bike but it's at your discretion...This is a good route for hybrid riders and the mountain bikers will get round just fine too. :)

Your bike should be in good working order for the ride. If in doubt, bring it along to us in the days before to check & fix it for you. :) Please check your tyres are pumped to the correct pressure & brakes are working the day before the ride. You can use our track pump or we can pump your tyres to the correct pressure on the day if you arrive at 9:45am. If there's an issue with your bike on the morning of the ride, please arrive earlier than this so it can be checked over for you and sorted pre-ride. :)

Please bring two spare inner tubes. Changing the inner tube is faster than fixing a puncture with a puncture repair kit. If you get a puncture on the ride - we will help you fix it if you need a hand. :) Watford Cycle Hub sell refurbished inner tubes for £1 (no patches); 50p (patched); & new inner tubes from £4.

Please also bring money for the cafe if you want to buy refreshments - the cafe's breakfasts are recommended by our regular riders. :)
