Setting off from Birtley, we'll be using a mixture of cycle paths, cycle lanes and roads to head to the coast and back. It is suitable for riders who are confident riding on roads amongst traffic. It is a route of c 25 miles, fairly flat coast bound, but with several short climbs on the return leg.
We'll head to the Nightingale at Washington where we will cross over the A19 and head towards Boldon. We then turn off to the coast via Cleadon and Whitburn, when we will follow the coast line to Roker for a pause and a cuppa. There are cafe's available or you can bring you own drinks and snacks. Hopefully the weather will be on our side so we can enjoy the sea view in the sunshine. The route back will take us over the Spire bridge along to Cox Green where we cross the Wear again to climb back up to the C2C for our return to Birtley.
The route is suitable for hybrids or gravel bikes. Lighter road bikes are not recommended due to surfacing on some cycle tracks.
So that we can leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to setting off. Please check your bike is in good working condition and bring a spare tube to fit your tyres. Expect to be out for about 4-5 hours.
As always we can’t predict the weather so please dress suitably. We recommend wearing cycle helmets.
