Another mostly off-road ride Guided Ride from BeWell Wigan.
We start out from Robin Park Arena passing around the DW Stadium which is the home of Wigan Athletic and Wigan Warriors. We join the Leeds Liverpool canal and pass-through Wigan Pier, from here we pick up the Leigh Branch of the Leeds Liverpool canal which runs alongside Scotmans Flash. We leave the canal towpath at Moss Bridge and head over to Ince passing by Springs Branch railway sidings. After crossing Warrington Road, we follow Ince Brook then over to Junction Terrace and back to the main branch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal. We then ride up to Top Lock, lock 65 of the Wigan Flight, there are 21 locks in the flight and we join them at the third one. From top lock we follow the canal to Hall Lane where we enter Haigh Woodland Park and continue up to the Kitchen Courtyard for our lunch break. After our break we will explore some of the local trails that take us back onto the canal, through the lower plantations, along the old mineral line which is now part of NCN55 over to Amberswood nature reserve and back through Ince to the DW at Robin Park
The route is mostly Canal Towpath with a couple of small sections of quiet road. The majority of the route has decent surfaces but if the weather has been bad then there are a couple of sections that can be a bit muddy.
We will be stopping in Haigh Woodland Park where there are several options to purchase refreshments around the Kitchen Courtyard.
You will need appropriate clothing for the weather, ideally in the spirit of Christmas as it is a festive ride. You should bring cash if you intend to purchase additional refreshments, a spare inner tube, pump, basic tools and a puncture repair kit.
