This is one of two introductory Henfield Breeze rides this November; both almost entirely traffic free, along the Downs Link dismantled railway line. “The Downs Link follows 2 disused railway lines and crosses the Surrey Hills, the Low Weald, the South Downs and the Coastal Plain. Since the trains departed in the 1960's the embankments and cuttings have become a green corridor for wildlife and people. The route connects a variety of habitats, passing banks of wildflowers, trees, hedges, woodlands, rivers, ponds and streams. This provides food and shelter to many species of wildlife, some scarce or uncommon” This leisurely, confidence building route starts with a short downhill “on-road” to pick up the Downs Link path heading south towards Steyning.  We will stop at the Stretham Bridge over the River Adur for a rest before retracing the route back to the beginning. There is not a café along this stretch, but it is very pretty, with lovely views of the South Downs. Although the cycle path is bumpy and you should expect a few muddy puddles after heavy rain, our route is flat. Please bring your own drink and snack. This route can be gradually extended along the old railway line, through the South Downs and beyond to the lovely cafes in Steyning (or even Shoreham) that are within reach on two wheels.                                                   ******************** Please come prepared for the weather forecast on the day - a few layers, a lightweight jacket to keep you warm and dry, gloves and good grip on your shoes (plus any medication you may require). Wearing a helmet is advisable; if you don’t have one please do not to worry you can still take part. If you enjoy the bike ride and would like to come again perhaps you could look to buy one then. This ride is only suitable for mountain bikes or hybrids with knobbly tyres. Please give your bike a check over before you leave home, are the tyres pumped up? Are the gears and brakes working properly? Always carry a spare inner tube, puncture repair kit and a pump, just in case. This easy ride is just under 4 miles and ideal if you want to get back into cycling on a lovely, safe off road route. We will always ride at the pace of the slowest rider and no-one will be left behind.
