Between September to May you will need good working lights on our evening rides (spare batteries are also advised).
PROMENADE RIDES ARE SOCIAL AND LEISURELY
Ride formats are always subject to the ability of riders attending and weather conditions; we live on the coast, and if it's windy, the coastal (promenade) route isn't the best route to cycle. So, have a look at our 'idealised' routes but please be aware that, in practice, these will be constantly adapted to suit: riders attending, weather conditions, and distance deemed most suitable for time and group constraints.
If you join our Promenade rides, please be aware that these can often be slower, to accommodate for pedestrians. Therefore, these rides are more social-based and good to join if you’re just getting back into cycling or want to chat a little more. If the ride is more inland (a Loop or a Longer Loop), you will need to feel confident on road sections, as we will be keeping a good steady speed although fairly flat, and largely traffic-free routes with a few traffic calmed country lanes. The Lytham Loops is set at a relaxed adult pace of 12-14mph, between 19-22kmph
Whatever the ride, you will be guided from Lytham Windmill. We often head through Lytham and Green Drive; a beautiful kilometre of cool green avenue. From there, we connect with as many Traffic Calm back lanes to a suitable watering hole before returning.
Our Promenade Rides are simple, social routes along the coastal cycle way. If we venture inland (and we often do if it’s windy) our favoured routes are through the back lanes around Singleton, Weeton, Kirham, Wrea Green, and Moss Side, sniffing out all the local's hidden calm lanes. If we've got any energy left, we'll have a short warm-up/warm-down in the park just before the beginning/end of the ride (usually in the summer). We aim to be back at the windmill for around 9pm give or take half-an-hour.
ON LANES: It's important to keep the group tight, CYCLE 2-ABREAST, and maintain a mutual cycling pace which ALLOWS CARS TO OVERTAKE A SHORT, WIDE GROUP with consideration. We try to gauge what is comfortable in order for new riders to gradually progress in speed and ability and join our more challenging Longer Loops. Experienced riders would definitely enjoy the conversational pace of these rides as they can be very relaxing
We meet at Lytham Windmill, starting with bike-checks at 6pm.
We begin the ride at 6.15. If you are an experienced rider, please join us at 6 to share any personal hints and tips with others during bike-checks.
Please also be sure to bring an extra windproof or waterproof layer and suncream (even in the winter)
NOTE: We advocate helmet wearing but it is your choice whether you wear a helmet or not. These are strictly Women Only rides with the lowest female age bracket is set at 16 years.
What do I need? Apart from any personal kit (repair kit, pump etc) you’ll need bike lights, spare batteries, money for a snack etc
