A women only gently paced evening ride from Newport to Gnossall, mostly off road along the National Cycle Network route 55. The route of the NCN 55 follows an old railway line that used to run from Stafford to Newport. This section is known as the Stafford to Newport Greenway. It is a lovely ride, very quiet, with extensive views of the surrounding countryside below on the stretches that are on an embankment. This route has been colonised by nature before it was reused by Sustrans and there is lush and varied vegetation either side of the path. You will perhaps catch a glimpse of a buzzard hovering or see a variety of waterfowl on the large ponds that lie just the north of the path. We will be stopping at the Boat Inn, alongside the Shropshire Union Canal for refreshments. We will have a relaxing pause here as we let the world slip slowly by on the Canal for awhile. We will return along the same route. Robust footwear is advised as there is a short unsurfaced section just over the Staffordshire border. This may be a short muddy section, depending on the weather. Hybrid or mountain bikes will be best if muddy. If necessary we may dismount and walk for a short stretch. This ride is suitable for all levels of ability, and if you are a new or returning lady rider we will happily support and encourage you.
