Starting point

Midlothian
EH8 9LD

We will ride from the Meadows to Holyrood Park, where we follow Queen’s Drive to just past Holyrood palace. We then loop round the parade ground and exit onto Royal Park Terrace. From here, we cross straight over London Road to Wishaw Terrace and Marionville Road before turning into Lochend Park, where we will briefly stop to look at the loch from the viewing platform. We then follow the Restalrig path as far as Seafield Road. After a short distance on the shared pavement, we head for Portobello promenade. We follow this all the way to Brunstane Road North. We then turn and head uphill on Brunstane Road to our refreshment stop at Costa near to The Range. After our stop, we follow cycle paths through Magdalene Glen and Jewel Park, before joining the Innocent path and returning to The Meadows.
Please note that our route up Brunstane Road is fairly steep. However, this is a relatively short section. Everyone can go at their own pace, and if you want to get off and push this isn’t a problem. We will take plenty of time and make sure (as always) that nobody is left behind. We will be rewarded by our refreshment stop immediately afterwards.

A ride through Holyrood Park and Lochend park to the seaside at Portobello.

The route is mostly on cycle paths, with some connecting sections on roads. All surfaces are paved. The ride is suitable for all bike types, although the route I have planned involves getting our bikes down three shallow steps to get into Holyrood park. If you think this will be a problem for you, let me know as alternatives are possible.

We will make brief stops in Lochend Park and along Portobello promenade to take in the views, and we will stop for refreshments at Costa near to The Range at Brunstane.

Bring a payment card or cash if you wish to buy any refreshments at our coffee stop. Helmets are strongly advised. Bring a spare inner tube (or two), and a lock if you have one, but don’t worry if you don’t as we can fasten our bikes to each other. Plan a means of getting home in the event of mechanical breakdown (call a friend, take a taxi etc).

First-timers welcome!
