This mountain bike ride is ideal for those who have mastered the workings of their mountain bike (including being able to use the gears) and would like to build up confidence and stamina on proper off road terrain.

This route uses mainly wide grass tracks through exposed upland moorland. In general the trail is not technical, this means there’s not much single track, no really steep drop offs and it’s not too rocky.

However, there are a few rocky bits to negotiate, some deeply rutted muddy sections and a few short sections of steeper descent. With careful riding, these more difficult segments can all be avoided or by keeping your speed down, can be ridden quite safely.

There’s no glossing over it, the first half of the route is generally uphill, with a few flatter sections to catch your breath on. The return trail is mostly gradually downhill.

On a clear day the views are stunning. You can see the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacon mountain ranges and amazing views all over the surrounding countryside. We may pass wild ponies grazing between the heather and of course flocks of sheep. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, a grouse will fly up from the undergrowth or if you’re even luckier, you may catch sight of a hare. Birds of prey are a fairly common sight with Red Kites and Buzzards often seen soaring above.
