Starting from - Meeting just outside the Greenwich footpath tunnel entrance (next to Cutty Sark) from 9.15am. We will introduce ourselves, check our bikes and be ready to ride at 9.30am.
There is a 50% chance that one of the lifts in the tunnel won’t be working, so if you are coming from the North side of the river and don’t fancy carrying your bike up and down the stairs (I never know which lift will be out of order!), I suggest taking the DLR to Cutty Sark. It’s ok to take a bike on the DLR, there are lifts from the platforms, and it’s a 3-min walk from the station to the meeting point.

We will start outside Cutty Sark and go along the riverside towards Woolwich, passing the Royal Naval college, riverside pubs, the O2 and Greenwich peninsula until we get to the Woolwich footpath tunnel. We won’t use the tunnel (it’s not the most exciting and pleasant passage to cross!) but will use the Woolwich ferry instead. The ferry is free and runs every 15 minutes, there is also no strike scheduled on the day! So, what not to like here? :)
Once we are on the other side of the river, we will carry on a cycle lane through a park, a short bit on a traffic road (which is not very busy) and onto a riverside path, passing the University of East London, ExCel Centre, and Emirates cable cars office.
Then we have a short ride on a traffic road, which is wide and not very busy, until we get on a cycle path towards East India Dock until we get to Blackwall DLR station, where we start heading towards Island Gardens. The last home stretch will require us to cross (on bikes or on a pedestrian crossing, depending how busy it is) a traffic road, and ride briefly on a segregated cycle lane until we are back on quiet paths along the river, where our final stop is Island Gardens (outside the North entrance to the Greenwich footpath tunnel). The stop is a 2-min walk to the Island Gardens DLR station.

I have two suggestions for a coffee stop- either a café at the Royal Docks or at an ice-cream place next to East India dock Basin- and am happy for you to decide democratically which one you prefer! Alternatively, I am open to your ideas too.:)

This is a nice and flat route mainly on traffic-free roads- perfect for beginners who want to clock more mileage, first-timers and anyone who fancies a social and friendly ride before lunchtime! :)

We will go at a steady pace that suits everyone, no one is left behind, with obligatory stops for taking pictures!

All you need is a working bike - pumped up tyres, working breaks, no-squeaky chain, and turning wheels- although we will also do a quick bike check before we head off. You don’t need a helmet or layers of fancy lycra although do dress appropriately for the weather! ;) I cannot guarantee warm and sunny weather, it’s out of my control, but I can promise a friendly atmosphere! ;) Because the pandemic is still out there, please pack some hand sanitiser, wipes, and a face mask. Please do not attend if you or anyone in your household has any Covid-19 symptoms or is currently required to self-isolate.
