WIGGLE STEEPLE CHASE The Wiggle Steeple Chase sportive gets its name from the large amount of historic church steeples you’ll see on your way around this tranquil tour through the quiet roads of Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Leicestershire – but take a step back and look at the terrain profile and the hill-formed chart spikes will look similar to a collection of holy roof structures. The hill climbs may not be the steepest, but enough to keep you on your toes when following one after the other. While you toil up one, and then the next, there will often be a church steeple on the horizon to reel in and race to, adding to the fun and combative element of this ride. You’ll start off in Huntingdon, then follow the sheltered and quiet country lanes until reaching Kimbolton, where the route darts off and heads north, towards Spaldwick. The course continues to weave through small villages on the continually undulating terrain, as you can soak up the rural Roman roads. One notable straight road will have you heading in a straight line for just short of 10 miles between Pilton and Old Weston. The loop comes back around into Cambridgeshire soon enough – try and recall how many church steeple structures you’ve spotted by now.
