The Heron Trail, also known as cycle route 179, links the quiet villages of Hoo, High Halstow, Cooling, Cliffe, Higham and Upnor. The cycle trail provides a combination of rural and maritime interest with spectacular views of the River Medway and the River Thames.
There are several areas of interest along the route including the RSPB Northward Hill Reserve, famed for the herons which give this route its name. Additional locations such as Cliffe Pools and Upnor Castle are just a short ride away from the route you'll follow. There are many places of historical interest including castles, churches and houses, some of which have a connection with Charles Dickens. There is so much to take in and a wealth of local knowledge that will make you want to come back and explore the route again.
Please remember your.....
- spare inner tube, pump and tools needed if you don't have quick release wheels
- water bottle(s) / snack
- any medications
- suitable clothing
- money for refreshments as there will be an opportunity to stop at a café mid-route
- a contact number for a lift/assistance in case of mechanical breakdown!! (ride leaders are not trained mechanics!)
Please check your bike over before you leave for the ride eg. brakes, tyres, chain, gears etc.!!
*** This has been categorised as challenging due to the big hills leading out of High Halstow towards Cooling and on the return from Chattenden to Hoo / High Halstow ... it’s fairly flat the rest of the route ***
