Leaving Middleton Top car park, DE4 4LT, we head east along the High Peak Trail, soon enjoying an exhilarating descent, and reach the High Peak Junction at Cromford. Here, we join the beautiful Cromford Canal and follow the towpath for four glorious miles. Before reaching Ambergate, we cycle on quiet back roads to Belper Lane End, eventually arriving in Belper. Here, we enjoy fabulous views over the River Derwent weir, Belper Mill and visit Belper River Gardens.
Now heading west, we travel across less-traveled roads and lanes, passing through the villages of Shottle and Kirk Ireton, before eventually arriving at the stunning Carsington Water—the 9th largest reservoir in England, holding almost eight billion gallons of water.
Cycling in a clockwise direction around the reservoir, we enjoy spectacular and far-reaching views. At its northern tip, we leave, passing through the hamlet of Hopton and back onto the High Peak Trail, soon arriving back at Middleton Top.
