Cycle ride, Epsom Downs and Box Hill, Surrey
Jul 21, 2018
(Cycling)
Saturday 21 July - A lovely cycle ride of about 20 miles across the Surrey downs, much of it off-road on shared bridle/bicycle tracks. Coffee/breakfast stop at Tattenham Corner near the famous racecourse with its amazing views, then a gentle drop down to the picturesque village of Headley. Then we climb up to Box Hill with its breathtaking views (lunch stop at the National Trust cafe). A sharp descent down Zigzag Road brings us to the village of Westhumble, followed by another climb to Ranmore Common via Polden Lacey, a National Trust property (optional visit if wished). A final descent past Denbies vineyard brings us to Dorking around 4.30 to 5.00pm (regular trains back to London). Dorking is one zone beyond zone 6, so single ticket needed to get back to zone 6 - about £2.80 with rail card. Get the 9.30 train from London Victoria arriving at 10.30 at Epsom Downs, or the 9.16 from London Bridge changing at Streatham Common. Epsom Downs is zone 6, so free with train pass. Kevin and Hazel.
