Saturday 4th August: Cycling the 5th Continent Ashford to Rye Version 2 31 miles
'The World, according to the best geographers, is divided into Europe, Asia, Africa, America, and Romney Marsh' Thomas Ingoldsby
'Romney Marsh, where the roads wind like streams through pasture and the sky is always three-quarters of the landscape.' John Betjeman
We will spend another day cycling across this mysterious 5th continent.
We will catching the HighSpeed train to Ashford International where we start the ride. We soon leave Ashford behind as we pedal into the heart of the marsh through Cheeseman Green, Bonnington to cross the Royal Military Canal. Then through the ancient village of New Church (mentioned in the Domesday Book), stopping to visit the old church, then back on our bikes again.
We stop for lunch at St Marys in the Marsh at the Star Inn, one of the oldest pubs on the marsh.
http://thestarinnthemarsh.co.uk/Then we cycle through Old Romney and Lydd, where we can stop for coffee or a drink, before heading off towards the coast at Jury's Gap. As we cycle westwards, we see the ancient fortified hilltop town of Rye rising above the flat marshland. Rye was once surrounded by the sea and smugglers roamed its cobbled streets and secret passages.
We will be catching the train home from Rye, but first we will spend a while exploring it on foot and maybe getting some fish and chips before finally catching the train home. Plenty of daylight in August, so no need to hurry back.
