Starting point

Church Lane entrance of Leytonstone Tube Station

A homage ride to the Vestry House Museum to visit the last day of the exhibition: "No Ordinary Bicycle - John Kemp Starley and the two-wheeled revolution". (Free entry).

Born in Walthamstow, John Kemp Starley (1854–1901) was a British inventor and industrialist who is widely considered the inventor of the modern bicycle. Starley’s modifications to the ‘safety’ bicycle enabled more people than ever before to access this form of transport, leading to the ‘bicycle craze’ of the late 19th century. The exhibition explores Starley’s developments, still reflected in bicycles today, and celebrates his legacy in terms of the bicycle’s unimagined social impact on health, social mobility and sustainability throughout the decades both here and abroad.

This is a ride of less than 10 miles (total). We will be cycling at a gentle pace along cycle routes and quietways. We expect our visit to the museum to last 20-30 minutes, after which, we plan to visit 'God's Own Junkyard' for a coffee before heading back.

Please dress appropriately for the weather on the day.
All participants are expected to bring: • A bike in good working order with tyres pumped to the correct pressure. (If in doubt, have it checked over by a local bike shop or qualified mechanic). • Carry at least a spare inner tube, pump and tyre levers. • Dress for the weather. • A drink and energy bar. • Lights if there is any chance of poor visibility.
