The month of May has to mean a visit to the Isabella Plantation in Richmond Park, to see the glorious azalaeas in full bloom. https://www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/richmond-park/things-to-see-and-do/isabella-plantation . But before we get there, we have a lovely leisurely-paced ride, mostly off-road or traffic-free, using the canal towpath and the Thames river path, as well as the cycle paths through the Parks.

From Ealing, we ride down the Grand Union Canal to Brentford, through Syon Park to Isleworth, and then along the river to Richmond Bridge. Here we cross the bridge to continue along the other side of the river via Petersham and Ham to Kingston Bridge. Crossing back over the river, we head into Bushy Park, riding around the Park to reach the Pheasantry for a refreshment stop.

We leave Bushy Park and return to the river, following it past the gates of Hampton Court and back to Hampton Wick, then up to the scenic Teddington Lock. Crossing the footbridge, we ride through Ham Common to the Ham Gate and a short, sharp climb to the top of Richmond Park. We will stop at the Isabella Plantation, locking up our bikes and exploring the gardens on foot, where we should see the azaleas in flower. Then we ride over the Park, with the option of a second refreshment stop at the Pen Ponds Cafe, before leaving via the Sheen Gate. An easy route of quiet back streets brings us down to Chiswick Bridge, and then back to Ealing.

The cafés at the Pheasantry and at the Pen Ponds offer warm drinks and basic food, or you might prefer to bring your own refreshments.

Although Covid restrictions are no longer in force, please continue to be mindful. Please do not attend if you have any Covid 19 symptoms, have tested positive, or are currently advised to self-isolate. You may wish to bring a face covering for use in enclosed public spaces.
