Medway coast, marsh and islands cycle ride 25 miles

This ride explores the Medway coast with views over sea forts and islands.

We leave Gillingham station and head for the coastal cycle path. We cycle along the strand, Saxon shoreway, sea walls and Riverside Country Park.

There is an option of exploring Horrid Island on foot if we leave our bikes at the visitors centre and walk across the causeway. The causeway was originally built for a horse drawn railway to carry chalk to the island and hulks containing French prisoners of war were moored on the island during the Napoleonic Wars.

Reclaiming our bikes we continue along the coast to East Rainham where we turn inland to follow National Cycle Route one through Boxted, Oak Hill and Howt Green and Iwade where we plan to stop for lunch at the Woolpack pub which has reasonably priced food and a beer garden.

After lunch we head back toward the coast and pass through Lower Halstow, Bayford Upchurch and Otterham Quay before finishing at Rainham.
