Starting from Cutting Room Square, we head south through Manchester using cycle lanes and quieter roads towards Didsbury and the Mersey Valley. From there the route joins paths around Manchester Airport, giving a rare close-up view of runways, aircraft operations and surrounding nature corridors. The ride includes: Urban cycle routes through south Manchester Riverside and woodland sections near the River Bollin Airport Orbital perimeter paths Café and lunch stop at Runway Visitor Park Return through Didsbury and Oxford Road corridors This is a mostly flat route with modest climbing.

The ride uses a varied mix of cycling environments. Much of the route follows segregated cycle lanes, traffic-calmed city streets, park paths and riverside trails. Around south Manchester and Didsbury there are sections on normal urban roads with traffic lights, busier junctions and occasional roundabouts. Near the airport, riders use wide shared-use paths, service roads and perimeter routes with good surfaces. There are short stretches of cobbles, possible gravel or woodland paths, and some uneven surfaces or potholes, so steady bike handling is required.

Planned stops include a short regroup point in south Manchester after leaving the city, allowing riders to check comfort, clothing and bikes before continuing. The main refreshment stop is at Runway Visitor Park, where toilets, café facilities and excellent views of aircraft movements are available. Additional brief pauses may be made at safe locations around the Airport Orbital route for photographs, navigation checks and to watch aircraft activity. On the return journey, further short regroup stops may be used if the group becomes spread out or traffic conditions require it.

Riders must be confident on roads, junctions and shared-use paths. Some busy junctions require care and clear group riding discipline. Helmets strongly advised. Bring water, snacks, spare inner tube and basic tools. Please check the weather and dress accordingly. If conditions or group ability require, leaders may shorten or amend the route.

First-timers welcome, provided you are a competent rider with good control of your bicycle and are comfortable riding in city centres, at busy junctions and alongside regular traffic. This route includes urban roads, traffic lights, roundabouts and shared-use paths, so it is not intended as a beginner or confidence-building ride. You should be able to start, stop, signal, change position safely and maintain a steady group pace. If you are unsure whether this ride suits your experience level, please contact the ride leaders before booking.
