A free ride for women from Penrhyn Castle taking in the unique heritage of the North Wales slate industry. We’ll start by cycling from the Castle through the grounds to Port Penrhyn. From here we’ll follow the route of the old Penrhyn Quarry Railway (now a cycle path) to the Penrhyn Quarry at Zip World, at one time the world’s largest slate quarry. A short stop here and we’ll return to the Castle via Tregarth.
We also get to cycle through Tynal Tywyll which is spectacular.
Back at the Castle we’ll head over to the cafe for a snack, lunch or cake & panad.
The cycle path rises gradually and the only steep hill is up to Zip World which you can take at you’re own pace & we’ll regroup at the top. This ride would be suitable for experienced cyclists who fancy a social spin through to those getting into or returning to cycling. The ride will be fully supported by Breeze Champions and we never leave anyone behind. If you are not sure if this ride is for you please do message me. Its also a great opportunity to experience Penrhyn Castle grounds if you’ve not been before.
The route is through the Castle grounds, along the cycle path, a short section along Bethesda High Street and some short sections along quiet roads.
Suitable for all bikes (including e-bikes) and open to all women over 16. The rides will be led by British Cycling trained cycle leaders. British Cycling's Breeze is a programme to get more women into riding bikes for fun. These rides are free, but you need to bring your own bike & please book in advance on this site.
*** CHILDREN: You are welcome to bring along children 8 years and over who can comfortably ride this distance or younger children and babies in BS Standard trailers, tagalongs and bike seats. We don't go particularly fast on a social Breeze ride but normally will ride at a pace of 8-10mph.
All children aged 5 and over must be registered and accompanied by a parent or guardian. If a child under 15 attends with an adult who is not their parent or guardian, the person making the registration must have the prior written consent of the child’s legal parent or guardian. The adult is fully responsible for the children for the duration of the ride. Each adult rider can book up to 4 children on to the ride. Under 18s MUST wear a helmet.
There is no entrance fee to the Castle, but if you are a member of the National Trust please bring your membership card to scan at the Visitor Centre. Penrhyn Castle are kindly allowing us to cycle through their grounds and have access to their cafe but we do need to stay together as a group.
If you would like to look round the castle itself you will need to purchase a ticket from the Visitor Centre if you are not a National Trust member.
Numbers are limited so please sign up ahead of time.
** Please bring your helmet and check your bike is in good order & the tyres are pumped up before arriving. Bring a drink and and clothes appropriate for the weather. **
