Starting point

Midlothian
EH8 9LD

Starting from The Meadows, we head across to the Innocent tunnel and path, before heading across to Craigmillar Castle. We then cross into Little France Park where we head uphill to The Wisp. We then follow quiet country lanes and paths to get to Monktonhall, after which we meet the river Esk. We follow the Esk through Musselburgh to the coast, then follow the coastal path to Fisherrow harbour (toilets available). We then follow the coastal road towards Portobello, turning off onto the path that follows Brunstane Burn up to Brunstane station. From here, we follow cycle paths through Magdalene Glen and Jewel Park, before picking up the Innocent path which will take us back to The Meadows.

We will stop for refreshments at the coffee van on Fisherrow Harbour if it is open (its opening hours can be somewhat erratic). If it is closed, we will head to the Costa by The Range store.
The route is mostly on cycle paths and quiet roads, with just a couple of very short sections of busier roads.

The route is rated as challenging because there are some hills, most notably in Little France Park, but none of the hills are severe. We will take plenty of time on them, and make sure (as always) that nobody is left behind. There are some sections of light gravel, so the ride is not suitable for road bike tyres.

Route rating

0 stars (0) Reviews

This circular route combines views of Arthur’s Seat and Craigmillar Castle with scenic riverside and coastal paths.

The route is mostly on cycle paths and quiet roads, with just a couple of very short sections of busier roads.

We will stop either at the coffee van in Fisherrow Harbour or at the Costa by The Range store where you can purchase refreshments if desired.

Helmets are advisable. Bring cards/cash for refreshments if required. Also, carry a spare inner tube for your bike if you have one (or alternatively have means of getting home in case of any mechanical problems).

We especially welcome newbies!
