Walker Tunnel Ride

Start at Walker Riverside Academy NE6 4AW
Join us for a Saturday jaunt experiencing the delights of the River Tyne - both banks between the Tyne Tunnel and town. Starting from the Walker Riverside Academy we’ll head eastwards, downstream via Wallsend and Willington Quay to the pedestrian/cycle Tunnel. We’ll cross to the south side of the river and pedal upstream via Jarrow, Hebburn and Bill Quay to the Swing Bridge where we’ll catch a cuppa at the Backyard cafe. On crossing the river we’ll head downstream through Walker Riverside Park and back to the start. There’s a few short up and downs on the way (475’ elevation total) but overall not too hilly. We’ll be riding a mix of off and on road paths and surfaces are ok so any bike will do it but a hybrid is probably the best compromise. This isn’t a beginners ride but one for those who’ve ridden at least 10 miles in one go recently.
In order for the ride to leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to us setting off. Please make sure your bike is in working condition and bring a spare tube to fit your tyres. Expect to be out for 3 and a half to 4 hours.
As always we can’t predict the weather so please dress suitably. You are better to be overdressed as you can always take layers off.

If the weather is bad we will only contact you if we are cancelling the ride and will do so no later than 9am on the day by putting a message in the ‘conversation’ tab in the ride. You should receive a notification by email if there is a message. If you have not heard from us we are still riding.
