Hartford Railway Station Chester Road Hartford. (Hartford Train station is on the Mid-Cheshire line from Manchester Piccadilly to Chester via Stockport, Altrincham, Knutsford and Northwich).

This is a mainly flat, mainly off-road ride with lovely views and interesting places. We start by pedalling along a little-known path between Hartford and Sandiway. We reach the main road at Sandiway, and follow the road to Cuddington where we join the Whitegate Way for a lovely long cycle along a flattish, and well marked route that takes us all the way to the salt mine at Winsford. The Whitegate Way is an ideal place to cycle, walk the dog or go horse-riding, because it is a well-maintained and mainly traffic-free route. The route has deep cuttings with oak, silver birch and bramble and provide an idea home for many woodland birds and animals.  Raised embankments above open farmland offer excellent views across the Cheshire Plain. On a clear day ( I am told!) you can see Cloud End , Mow Cop and Jodrell Bank. The Whitegate railway line carried salt for almost 100 years, from the mines along the west bank of the River Weaver, which we pass, and up to Cuddington where it joined the Chester - Manchester line. The line finally closed in 1966 and today you can enjoy a picnic at Whitegate Station, the only station along the way.  Shady wooded cuttings contrast with sunny open embankments, offering spectacular views over the patchwork fields towards the Peckforton Hills. We have to get off out bikes at the now derelict Whitegate Station as they are repairing the bridge. They have added some steps for us to carry our bikes the short walk back onto the main path. At Winsford, we cycle along the river to the lock, towards the 'blue bridge ' and back to Hartford. If riders would like to, we can stop at Relish for a tea and cake at the end, or ride straight back to the station. The choice is yours! :-) We will do a bike check and introduction at 9:45 so that we can set off on time.  I look forward to leading you on this fabulous ride! Claire x 07793749765 This ride is suited for mountain bikes or sturdy hybrids as there are a few steady inclines. Please bring a helmet, inner tube and puncture repair kit just in case. It is suitable for beginners. We will just take it steady if you don't cycle much but still want to give it a try! Newcomers to Breeze rides are very welcome, don't worry if you don't know anyone, we're a friendly bunch.   All the usual Breeze terms and conditions apply. Please check your bike before you leave home. Please wear suitable clothing for our variable Spring weather. Don't forget to bring a water bottle or drink. Most important of all - please bring your lovely smile!! :-)
