This route starts at Orrell Water Park, a small nature reserve based around 2 disused reservoirs. Over 100 bird species have been recorded on the site, as well Butterflies, Dragonflies and Damselflies. Free parking is available at the start point. The route is mostly flat or downhill, with a short, sharp climb after about 2.5km, and a longer climb near the end of the ride. The middle section of the ride follows some classic flat West Lancs lanes, with long straights punctuated by right-angled bends. The highlight of the ride comes in the last few km as we take on the famous ascent of Shaley Brow. It may be a tough challenge if you try to race your mates to the top, but click down the gears, take it steady, and enjoy the treelined road as it snakes you to the clear summit, with fabulous views across West Lancs, Merseyside, and beyond to North Wales.
