Starting point

Midlothian

A steady cycle to Roslin on cycle paths and quiet roads.

Leaving the Meadows, we make our way through the Innocent Tunnel then through King's Haugh to join the tarmac path up to Craigmillar Castle. Crossing the road at pedestrian lights, we vary our usual route to sweep downward on a shared path, skirting around the Royal Infirmary before joining Quiet Route 61 where we take a series of left and right turns on quiet roads through Moredun and Hyvots Loan, conveniently breaking up the gentle climb!

We will take our time on the hills, stopping every so often to take a drink and catch our breath.

We follow Route 61 all the way to Roslin where we'll take a well earned refreshment break, either at Dolly's Tearoom or if it's a fine day you might prefer to bring your own picnic and sit outside. There are benches on the green opposite the tearoom.

We retrace our route on the same cycleway but this time continue it all the way down to Shawfair, then up on the road through Danderhall to reach Little France Park. As we freewheel downhill there are some splendid views to enjoy. We have a shorter climb up towards Craigmillar Castle, then retrace a little of our route on the tarmac path down through the park to emerge at light-controlled crossroads to cross the main road onto Duddingston Road South for a short distance before turning left onto the Innocent Railway path, back through the tunnel and making our way back to the Meadows.

The route is all on tarmac; 14 miles on cycleways, the rest on quiet roads.

Helmets are recommended. Bring money for our cafe stop if you want to buy anything there, a bike lock if you have one and your usual kit - spare inner tube(s) and any tools needed to remove your wheel if not quick release and/or have a plan to return home with your bike if unable to continue for any reason (eg friend/taxi)
