Amazing Durham Women - In Search of Connie Ellis Suffragette
Broompark Esh Winning Lanchester and Langley Park
Sunday 8th July 2018 2pm 17 miles
Start from Broompark Picnic Site DH7 7RJ
This is the second of this year’s rides to celebrate 100 years since (some) women were first able to vote, giving us a perfect reason to learn more about some extraordinary County Durham women. On this ride we’ll discover more about the young firebrand suffragette, Connie Ellis, who taught at Esh Winning School. She was a young suffragette who went on to lead a full life in politics and public life.
Our ride will largely follow the Deerness and Lanchester Valley Railway Paths with a middle, on road section, between Esh Winning and Lanchester, including a climb between the 2 valleys. The railway lines are generally good quality so a hybrid bike is most suitable, although a mountain or road bike would also be ok.
This is a suitable ride if you’re wanting to build up your confidence as well as for more experienced riders wanting a relaxed trip with a bit of chat and Connie Ellis history included.
We’ll be stopping at one of our favourite spots, Cafe Amadeus in Lanchester, for refreshments.
In order for the ride to leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to us setting off. Expect to be out for 3-4 hours in total including cafe.
