Breeze Apollo Mission to Peterlee
Sunday 10th September 2017 10am 25 miles
Renny's Lane opposite Gary Potts Motors near junction with Dragon Lane, Gilesgate DH1 2RW
We're making the most of this year's Heritage Open Days with an excursion to Peterlee's Apollo Pavilion which is an iconic example of 1960s concrete public artwork about which we will no doubt have different opinions. The Pavilion is open for just one day so it is a rare opportunity to have a full look around with local guides on hand.
We'll start our ride from Gilesgate and pedal mainly along quiet roads with some off road thrown in. We'll navigate our way via Sherburn, Pittington, Shadforth, Ludworth, Wheatley Hill and Castle Eden to the Apollo where there's refreshments being provided nearby especially for the Open Day. Our return will be a different route through Shotton, Haswell and Littletown.
There's some uppy downies along the way but nothing unexpected for Durham and overall the route's best suited for hybrid bikes. The high proportion of on road makes this ride suitable for more confident riders.
Expect to return by about 3.30 - 4pm. It will probably take us at least a couple of hours riding each way as well as about an hour and a half at the Pavilion/refreshments.
Please wear suitable clothing and bring a spare inner tube for your own size tyres. And of course something to snack on in case you feel peckish.
Hope you can join us for a fun and friendly ride and to a curious destination.
