Join us for this short ride which is part of our weekly summer series of Thursday evening starter rides in the Durham area during May, June and July. These rides are suitable for those new or returning to cycling to build up confidence and stamina over the weeks, while enjoying the summer evenings and good company.

A visit to Finchale is a must and we will enjoy one of Durham’s hidden gems.

We’ll start from outside the library and head up Framwellgate Peth, past the DLI and up through Aykley Heads on the off road paths. We’ll then navigate our way through Newton Hall to Frankland Prison and the quiet road down to Finchale Abbey where we can admire the ruins and the River Wear. We’ll return back to the prison and head directly back along the quiet and scenic off road Frankland Lane. This is a mix of off and on road (quiet) and with good quality surfaces. Suitable for all bikes apart from skinny tyre road bikes.

Because this is Durham, it is not flat as we must climb up away from the River Wear before descending back down to it at Finchale. However, hills mean views and a big sense of satisfaction.

In order for the ride to leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to us setting off. Please make sure your bike is in working condition, bring a spare tube to fit your tyres and have lights in case the eve is dreary. We should be out for a couple of hours and there will be the option to stop for a cuppa/drink once back.

If you cannot make it please cancel your place using the option in let’s ride.

If there is inclement weather we may need to cancel the ride and will do so no later than 5.30pm on the day. If you have not heard from us the ride is going ahead.
