There are small adjustments to the attached route map. The route will be approximately 18 miles.

Our next series of rides will see us taking on more challenging routes, with regards to terrain and miles. As a group our aim is to steadily improve our fitness enabling us to cycle that little bit further and perhaps even a little faster.
Challenges we are working up to are:
Cycling out to see the Tour de Yorkshire Women race finish in Doncaster on Thursday 3rd May and of course cycling back again!
Completing the Wheel of Wakefield in a few months time!!

This weeks route:
Setting off from Stanley Ferry Wacky warehouse we turn RIGHT onto Ferry Lane (Birkwood Rd), over both the river and canal bridges.
Turn immediately RIGHT after canal bridge onto canal side (slowly, there’s a gate and pot holes).
Follow canal towpath to RIGHT for 1 ¾ miles to Foxholes Lane Bridge.

(quiet road section)
Turn RIGHT onto Foxholes Lane to T junction with Church Road.
Turn RIGHT then immediately LEFT up side of Mary Magdalene church on The Crescent.

Straight across at these traffic lights onto High Street … keep on eye out … cars a generally parked along left hand side of this road…. We need to turn LEFT onto a track between terraced houses, approx. 300 meters from main traffic lights you have just come through, it is signed Wheel of Wakefield but can easily be missed.

(track / cycle path section)
Follow this track for ½ mile passing St. John’s Baptist school on right and crossing over Cemetery Road to stay on track.
At track crossroads (Eastfield Grove on left) turn RIGHT following the Wheel of Wakefield signs on cycle pathways for ½ mile.

At junction with Snydale Road turn LEFT. Before reaching the roundabout cross over onto the cycle path on the RIGHT.
Follow this Normanton Bypass cycle path for just over 1 mile.

(minor road section)
That the roundabout turn RIGHT, at roundabout turn LEFT onto Boundary Lane.
At T junction turn RIGHT onto Warmfield Lane.

Reap your reward for cycling up Normanton Bypass with a lovely, just over 1 mile down hill !!
Warmfield Lane leads into Kirkthorpe Lane.
After approximately 1 mile we turn RIGHT down a track through Southern Washlands Woods. Look out for the Blue way signs Wheel of Wakefield.
(we do NOT take the track shown on attached route map as this track is too muddy at present. We cycle approx. 300 meters further along Kirkthorpe Lane)

(track section)
Track is fairly steep with some loose stones so be steady.
At fallen tree turn SHARPE LEFT for a little down and up ..
Turning immediately RIGHT when you get to top of UP!
Follow track for 300 meters
At fork turn RIGHT … drops down short and sharp, be steady.
At the Blue Bridge we go up and over staying on track to the second bridge.
Cross the bridge to the junction with A6194 New Wakefield Link Road

At junction with Aberford Road straight across onto cycle track for ½ mile
Arrive back triumphant at Stanley Ferry.

This route is subject to change due to seasonal weather conditions. Please ensure you check you Let’s Ride account for any messages prior to setting out to join the ride.

This route is a figure 8 loop. We start and finish at Stanley Ferry and will have our brew/comfort stop there also.

This is a challenging ride. Please ensure you are properly prepared for cycling and being out for about 3 hours. Ensure you have enough clothing layers. It is easy to take layers off when you get hot but very difficult to warm up if no spare layers.

Food and Drink whist cycling.
Water is a MUST! Two bottles are always better than one if you can fit them to your bike or a camel pack (rucksack for carrying water).
You may not feel like drinking when it is cold but keeping hydrated is a must and extremely important to your wellbeing. Frequent sips of water throughout your ride are recommended.

Food snacks such as energy bars, chocolate/ muesli bars are small enough to fit into your pocket and to give you a boost if needed.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

NO CYCLING HELMET, NO RIDE
Cycle helmets MUST be worn by ALL participants
Please ensure:
You wear footware appropriate for cycling such as trainers or cycling shoes.
No flapping trouser legs that may get caught in your bike chain.

Please ensure you have a puncture repair kit and bike pump.
