Croxdale from Shincliffe
Sat 1st September 1.15pm 10 miles
Start from The Lay-by at north end of Shincliffe Village off High Street (park in the lay-by rather than in front of the houses in High Street)
A short Saturday afternoon jaunt before the school’s go back and a chance to try out the new Betty Bee’s, long awaited cafe, in Shincliffe. We’ll take a tour of Croxdale Estate via bridleways and mainly quiet roads. Starting at Shincliffe we’ll pedal the Croxdale Bridleway through to Sunderland Bridge where we’ll pick up quiet roads to Hett and Tursdale from where there’s more bridleways, emerging at Bowburn Community Centre to return via the road to Shincliffe.
Some of the off road’s fairly rough but as it’s the end of the summer and less water around it’s the best time to try out these paths. Hybrids and mountain bikes are the best choice of bike. There’s a few short-ish ups and downs but nothing too dramatic by Durham standards.
This is a suitable ride if you’re just starting to get out back on a bike or a longer break as well as for more confident riders wanting a relaxed ride with a bit of chat and a chance to try out Durham’s newest cake stop.
In order for the ride to leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to us setting off. Please make sure your bike is in working condition and bring a spare tube to fit your tyres. We should be out for about an hour and a half plus cafe time, but be aware it is difficult to be precise about timing.
As always we can’t predict the weather so please dress suitably. You are better to be overdressed as you can always take layers off.
