Start On C2C above Wheatsheaf Inn, Birtley

We’re off on a challenging autumnal jaunt to Newcastle and back. We’ll head out west on the Sustrans C2C line for a gentle uphill warm up and at High Handenhold will head north for a serious climb via the back roads in the Kibblesworth direction, before dropping down to the Team Valley, along Lady park and the off-road Teams Cycleway to join the Tyne. Over the Swing Bridge we’ll negotiate the city centre and on passing the Civic Centre will whizz under the central motorway to the much loved Exhibition Park.
Our return will be more direct, along the A167 corridor, passing the Angel of the North.

The route is largely good quality surfaces both on and off road. So most suitable for hybrid bikes but definitely not skinny road tyres. There is a particularly challenging hill after High Handenhold and a 2-3 mile section on narrow rural roads that has more motor traffic than you’d wish for.

In order for the ride to leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to us setting off. Expect to be out for about 5 hours in total which will include a refreshment stop at Exhibition Park.

Please come suitably dressed for the weather and make sure you’ve got a spare tube to fit your tyres.
