Starting point

Midlothian
EH5 3ET

We follow paths to St Mark's Park, then make our way via the cycle lanes on MacDonald Road and Brunswick Street to Lochend Park. We then take the Restalrig path, which leads us to Seafield and along towards Portobello. We'll join the prom for a short way then wind our way through quiet back streets and lanes to almost the far end of the prom before turning back westwards and cycling all the way along the prom to enjoy the sea views.

We then repeat a short section of path to return to Seafield, before continuing along the Restalrig path to Leith Links and the Shore at Leith. The path beside the Water of Leith then takes us back to the Warriston path and to our start point.

Route rating

An easy-paced ride through parks and along the coast on cycle paths and quiet roads.

This is a gentle ride with a couple of short inclines, a few roads to cross (at lights) and mostly on tarmac.

We will make brief stops at various points along the way to take in the views, and we will stop for refreshments either along Portobello promenade or on Leith Links (depending on the weather).

Helmets are recommended. Bring money or a payment card for the cafe stop if you want to purchase anything or you can bring your own refreshments if you prefer. Bring a bike lock if you have one (we can lock bikes together if you don’t). It's wise to carry a spare inner tube or two for your bike and a plan for getting home in case you are unable to continue for any reason (phone a friend, taxi etc).

First-timers welcome!
