Starting point

Midlothian
EH3 9QU

Starting from the Leamington lift bridge, we will head across the Meadows towards the Innocent path. However, instead of heading down the Innocent tunnel, we will turn into Pollock Halls and cut through by the Confucius Institute onto quiet residential roads to reach Peffermill Road by the Nairn’s oatcake factory. After a very short distance on the road, we turn onto Kings Haugh through Peffermill industrial estate. We then join the Innocent path where it crosses Duddingston Road West and follow this to Bingham, then taking Duddingston Row to the junction with Milton Road West. We then follow the path through Duddingston golf course to Duddingston Road West. From here, it is a short distance up Old Church Lane to Dr Neil’s garden. After our stop there, we ride up to Duddingston Low Road (which is closed to traffic). Exiting Holyrood Park, we follow our outward route as far as the Meadows. The final leg of our journey is along Middle Meadow Walk and then Leamington Walk across Bruntsfield Links. Going down Leamington Terrace will then take us back to our start.

An easy ride to Dr Neil’s garden in Duddingston. The overall ride is 9.1 miles so is suitable for those who don’t want to cycle too far or who are cycling to get to the start point.

This is a gentle ride mostly on cycle / shared paths, with a few short sections of road which we will guide you through. All paths are tarmac except for a short bit of woodland path when exiting the golf course which is hard packed. This could be a little muddy if there has been rain.

We have allowed enough time for you to be able to explore Dr Neil’s garden, although the amount of time we want to spend there will be weather-dependent. We can enjoy refreshments from the café (which has indoor and outdoor seating), or you can bring your own refreshments if you prefer.

Helmets are recommended. Bring money or a payment card for the cafe stop if you want to purchase anything. Bring a bike lock if you have one (we can lock bikes together if you don’t). It's wise to carry a spare inner tube or two for your bike and a plan for getting home in case you are unable to continue for any reason (e.g. friend, taxi, rescue insurance).

First-timers welcome!
