Sun-Derland has more light themed places than Durham so we’ve worked out an excursion to our River Wear sister city for a warm up ride, ready for 2025’s Lumiere.

Our starting point is just a whisker from Shiney Row and we'll pedal to the Stadium of Light on our way to Roker Lighthouse where we’ll stop for refreshments.

The ride is a mix of on and off road with a few hills, although mostly short-ish. Suitable for most bikes apart from skinny road tyres. We'll start by pedalling out the bottom end of the park to Farringdon and Silksworth to join NCN 1 to town and over the River Wear via the new Keel Crossing. Here we’ll cheer or lament the previous day’s score against Arsenal and head down to the riverbanks and pedal along to Roker where we can admire the lighthouse.
We’ll return back up river, passing the Second Sun and crossing at the Spire to join the old railway line past South Hylton then heading uphill to Offerton followed by a deserved downhill back to the park.

In order for the ride to leave promptly, please be punctual so we can carry out bike checks, etc. prior to us setting off. Expect to be out for about 4 hours in total which will include the refreshment stop at Roker. Please come suitably dressed for the weather and make sure you’ve got a spare tube to fit your tyres.
