Thanks to the generosity of our Ride Leader Team, we have been able to open up an 8-10 mph average pace group for this ride, as well as our 10-11 mph average pace group. This is specifically to give riders a chance to do this route who are on mountain bikes, or hybrids with off road tyres who can go the distance on Challenging category rides and manage the hills, but will be a bit slower due to their bike type. This group is also for anyone who can cope with the Challenging route, but will find it more comfortable at a slower pace, or for anyone not sure what pace they ride at exactly but who is used to doing hilly routes and would like to come and ride with a friendly and supportive group. :)

This is a circular route of 30 miles but it would be possible to just ride one-way with us, then stay on in the sunshine at Berkhamsted Castle before taking the train back to Watford Junction, if you would like a shorter ride. For those of you on mountain bikes or hybrids with off-road tyres, you may also want to ride back independently along the Grand Union Canal towpath to Watford, if you want a flat and traffic-free route back...

This is a social ride and a chance to pass through some lovely lanes and take on a range of different hill challenges as we climb up into the Chiltern Hills to then drop down into Berkhamsted for a picnic at the Castle.

We will then climb back up and over via another series of lovely lanes to head back to Watford. A good challenge of a route, with 443 metres / 1453 feet of climbing in total and great practice for anyone hoping to do sportives and charity bike rides this Summer! : )

The Watford Cycle Hub Ride Team are happy to help and support you and our Challenging Rides will gradually get longer over the summer to help you grow and develop the fitness you need for your chosen challenge, and enjoy some lovely countryside, in good company, along the way. : )

Please check your bike is in good working order before the ride - especially that your brakes are working & your tyres are pumped.

Please also bring two spare inner tubes with you. Changing an inner tube is faster than getting out the rubber glue, should anyone suffer a puncture on the day & our Ride Leader team are happy to help fix it should you want some help. :)

Should your bike be in need of a bit more TLC, as a Not-For-Profit, Community Enterprise, we do free bike assessments and will offer you an honest price for fixing, fine tuning or servicing your bike.
